Cycle 1 Lead User Training Southern Metropolitan Region Outer Sub Region 2010
Before we start, let’s give thanks....
As a brand new and exciting innovation to the Victorian Education system, the Ultranet is still somewhat of an elusive and mysterious beast. Before long, as you become more familiar with it, it will become more like your domestic pet dog – good to have around and ever reliable! Before we get started today, we would like to gauge a few of your basic understandings of the Ultranet and what it offers you and your school. The following quiz will help us to do this........ A quick Ultranet Quiz
Outline of today’s training
Ultranet Functionality
Questions, likes & ideas Throughout the day, use the form from your folder to record any questions you may have, things that you like or ideas that you might have about the use of the Ultranet.
To help you to develop some basic familiarity with the Ultranet, we would like you to complete a small ‘treasure hunt’. At the end of any treasure hunt, there is an abundance of fantastic riches awaiting the person who gets there first. Except with this treasure hunt. You will only be getting a chocolate bar. But please give it your best shot anyway! Work through the sheet in your folder and find the answer to each of the prompts. It will help to develop a basic understanding of the navigation and appearance of the different spaces within the Ultranet. Ultranet Treasure Hunt
Why Would We Use the Ultranet?
Teachers Quick and easy access 24/7 access to all resourcees Greater information about each student More sharing
Teachers working with Students Greater ability to differentiate the curriculm New studetns into your class – more info
Students More klnowledge and information availalble to students Teachers will more easily be able to use an enquiry model More self directed learning Greater communication
Parents Know what’s going on in the classroom Information about students progress in real time Ongoing access to information
Mind Map Brainstorm Which space does what? What is possible? How will we use it? In your school groups, you will need to work together to reconstruct the Ultranet mind map correctly. Ultranet – the possibilities
Learning to use the Ultranet and considering its impact on teaching and learning is going to provide challenges for all users. Clear understood flows Confusion frustration angst Early adopters late adopters majority Transformational Learning General change experience John Edwards

Teachers and students both have their own eXpress space. This is a personal space. You can choose who sees what in your eXpress Space. It features a landing, wall, portfolio and profile page (and learning goals for students). You choose how best to build the content of your eXpress Space. eXpress Space

Collaborative Spaces are available to teachers and students. The person who creates the space is the owner and moderator. Any student who sets up a space needs a teacher to approve it and moderate before it becomes live. Collaborative Spaces
Moderator Role All online spaces MUST have a moderator whether set up by staff or students. Only staff can be moderators. If you set up a space, you automatically become the moderator of that space. Moderators are responsible for reviewing content in a space regularly to check its appropriateness. To support this process, all members of the space are able to flag inappropriate content for moderation. This will result in an email being sent to the moderator who can then review the content and take appropriate action.
There are a range of applications (or portlets) available which can be added to any pages or spaces within the Ultranet. Applications
What makes a good space?
There are a few issues that need to be considered regarding the use of the Ultranet within your school. Some of these issues may require the development of some policies or protocols to ensure consistent practices across your school. Issues to consider

Editor's Notes

  1. The moderator is an important role in the Ultranet. The moderator is responsible for dealing with any inappropriate content. When a staff member sets up a space, they become the Space Owner and will also automatically be assigned the moderator role. You may also request other staff who are members of the space to become moderators. While students can set up a space, it will not become active until the have requested a staff member to become a moderator, and the moderator has accepted. Staff will be able to view moderator requests on their Home Page. They can be accepted or declined.Members of a space are able to flag inappropriate content at any time using the ‘Flag inappropriate content’ action on the Action menu of the Global Navigation. When this occurs the moderator of the space will be sent an email asking them to review the flagged content and to take corrective action if required, by editing of removing the content from the space. This would occur if the moderator determined that the content is defamatory, abusive, obscene, threatening or illegal, and/or that it infringes on the ability of others to enjoy the space, or it infringes on the rights of others.
